Milton’s youth continue to be vocal about climate change.
Sustainable Milton and Friday’s For Future Toronto teamed up for a protest yesterday.
It was held outside of Milton MPP Parm Gill’s office, at the corner of Main Street and Ontario Street.
The groups were protesting climate change and demanding the provincial government take action, as well as Bill 229 being read a third time earlier this week. Bill 229 affects Ontario Conservation Authorities. Conservation Halton has been vocal against the Bill, even going as far as sending a letter to the provincial government several weeks ago. Read more on that here.
Regarding climate change, a member of Fridays For Future Toronto, Zoha Naghar, says older generations need to act now so that younger generations can live.
Saturday, December 12th will be the 5th anniversary of the Paris Agreement. It was signed by 197 countries, including Canada, with the goal of keeping the global temperature increase this century to 1.5℃, as well as to help countries deal with the impacts of climate change. The groups say that no government is “making the effort to contribute to the 1.5℃ goal.”
With the protest having been held at MPP Gill’s office, Naghar hopes that he will fight and take action.
myFM News reached out to MPP Gill’s office for a comment:
“Milton is home to many natural heritage areas. Our community takes pride in these spaces, while recognizing the importance of a clean environment.
“That is why it is important to realize that Schedule 6 of Bill 229 does not change the work of Conservation Authorities to protect and preserve provincially significant wetlands, provide flood and other natural disaster mitigation, and more. It also states clearly that it will not apply to lands within the Greenbelt. Unlike the previous government who dug up the Greenbelt an alarming 17 times, our government remains committed to protecting it.
“These commitments are outline in our Made-in-Ontario Environmental Plan, which is designed to protect our air, land, and water, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”
