George Minakakis has officially announced that he is running for mayor of Milton in the 2026 municipal election.
The current town councillor says his campaign will focus on managing growth, affordability, public safety, and economic development as Milton continues to rapidly expand.
In his announcement this week, Minakakis said residents are facing pressures from rising taxes, increasing living costs, and longer commutes, adding that Milton needs leadership prepared to address the community’s changing needs.
His platform is built around three main priorities:
- Smart growth, including infrastructure, amenities, and local jobs keeping pace with population growth
- Fiscal responsibility and limiting tax increases
- Community safety and addressing crime concerns
Minakakis highlighted his experience as a town councillor (having recently won the Milton By-Election), former chair of ACTION Milton, former chair of Milton Hydro, and his background as a private-sector executive. He also pointed to his community involvement, including charitable work helping at-risk children and adults access vision care.
Current Milton Mayor Gord Krantz recently announced his decision to run again for his long-held seat. Regional Councillor Sameera Ali made her intentions of running for mayor known in December, with her bid being finalized when nominations opened up.
Minakakis says he plans to campaign on what he describes as practical leadership and a focus on preparing Milton for future growth and challenges.
The municipal election is set for October 26th.
