Milton has taken another step toward its long-term growth plans, with council adopting the Agerton Secondary Plan that will guide development of a new community on the eastern edge of town.
Approved at the Monday, June 22nd council meeting, the plan covers approximately 359 hectares of land bounded by Highway 401 to the north, Derry Road to the south, the Greenbelt to the west, and Eighth Line to the east.
The Agerton Secondary Plan establishes a framework for what the Town describes as a complete community, combining residential neighbourhoods, employment lands, parks, schools, community services, and transportation infrastructure within a single area.
According to the Town, the future community is expected to accommodate at least 14,100 residents and 17,500 jobs. A proposed Milton Trafalgar GO Station near Derry Road and Trafalgar Road would serve as a major transit hub, with the highest-density development planned around the station area.
The plan also includes a network of roads, cycling routes, and pedestrian connections designed to link residents with employment areas, schools, parks, and transit options.
Additional features identified in the plan include retail and commercial areas, two elementary schools, a community centre, a fire station, parks of varying sizes, and three potential sites for places of worship.
Planning for Agerton began in 2018 and involved multiple rounds of public consultation, including public information centres, open houses, community meetings, and reviews by agencies and stakeholders. The project was also updated to align with changing provincial planning policies.
The Agerton Secondary Plan is one of several major planning initiatives recently approved by Milton Council. Earlier this week, council also adopted the Town’s new Official Plan, the first comprehensive update to Milton’s planning framework in approximately 30 years. The Official Plan outlines how the community is expected to grow through 2051 and incorporates policies related to housing, transportation, employment lands, environmental protection, and future urban expansion.
Before the Agerton Secondary Plan can officially take effect, Milton’s new Official Plan must receive approval from Ontario’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing.
