Milton Town Hall
Milton Council has officially adopted a new Official Plan.
This marks the first comprehensive update to the municipality’s long-term planning framework in three decades.
The plan, approved during Council’s Monday, June 22nd meeting, will guide how Milton grows and develops through 2051. It now moves to the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing for final approval.
An Official Plan serves as a municipality’s blueprint for future growth, helping determine where homes, businesses, parks, roads, and other infrastructure should be located. It also provides direction for land-use decisions and development applications.
The new plan comes as Milton continues to be one of the fastest-growing communities in Ontario. Town officials say the updated framework is intended to help manage that growth while ensuring future development aligns with community needs.
The Official Plan was developed through the Town’s “We Make Milton” review process, a multi-year initiative that included public consultations, studies, and feedback from residents, businesses, landowners, community organizations, and other stakeholders. According to the Town, thousands of people participated throughout the review process.
Among the key priorities identified in the new Official Plan are creating complete communities where residents can live, work, shop, and access services closer to home; encouraging a wider range of housing options, including affordable housing; protecting employment lands and commercial areas; planning for different forms of transportation; and evaluating future urban boundary expansion opportunities.
The plan also introduces secondary planning processes for specific areas and incorporates policies that were previously part of the former Halton Region Official Plan.
It’s supported by a number of background studies examining topics such as transportation, housing, retail development, parks, infrastructure, and land use. Those studies helped inform the policies, maps, and growth strategies included in the document.
