They say that if you want to remember something, it’s good to forget something – and science actually backs that up, apparently!
That’s according to a new book called ‘The Psychology of Memory’.
Just like Jennifer Aniston forgetting David Schwimmer in the Uber Eats commercials, you forgetting where you left your keys can be a sign that your brain is prioritizing something else.
The writers of the book recommend techniques to boost your memory. One of those is what they call “retrieval practice.” The best example is when you meet someone new, you should use their name whenever you address them. This puts an emphasis on remembering them.
How’s your memory?
Do you forget where you last placed your keys?
Are you always forgetting that one neighbours name?
Tell “what’s his face” we say hi!

What else did we talk about this morning?
ICYMI – Get to know Tony Walton, Family Rights Party candidate for Milton’s by-election
The Milton by-election will come to an end this week. Leading up to election day, we’ve been interviewing all willing candidates. That includes Tony Walton of the Family Rights Party.
Daily WTF – Town Elects Its Oldest Cat as Mayor
A small town in Bulgaria has the purrrrrfect mayor. During an election, a group of teenagers thought it’d be a fun prank to add the community’s most popular cat, Sir Whiskers, to the election ballot. Voters noticed the addition, and caught on to what was happening. They started voting for the old feline, and after the election, Sir Whiskers was the winner. Turns out, there was nothing in the rule book against this, and so they declared the cat the newest mayor of their town. This was back in 2018, and in the years since, this small European town has seen a boom in tourism as people want to see the face that runs the place. All I’m saying is, Mayor Krantz might want to look out… Fluffy is coming!
Daily Did You Know – The history behind Milton’s Lloyd Landing and Powadiuk Place
With the election coverage taking up a lot of airtime the last week or so, we decided to hold off Street Name Monday and have Street Name Tuesday this week! Each week, we speak with Milton Historical Society President John Challinor about the origins of local street names. This week, we have a street connected to Milton’s Crawford Lake, as well as a street named after a former councillor back when Halton Region was first created. Two more streets will be touched on next week!
More than 6,500 people have voted already for Milton by-election
The advanced polling numbers from last week are in for the Milton by-election. According to Elections Ontario, roughly half of the early voters from the 2022 provincial election showed up to the polls last week. Just over 6500 voters made their decision early, which makes up about 6% of local registered voters. That’s down from just over 12% in 2022. I saw online that apparently this is expected, as by-elections traditionally get less voters. If you missed the advanced voting period, and you haven’t mailed in your ballot, you can vote in-person this Thursday on election day.
Smile cookies are back at Tim Hortons this week
Make sure you stop in at a Timmies this week to get yourself a smile cookie. They’re back in stores for this week only. 100% of the proceeds help local charities, including the Milton District Hospital Foundation. Since 1996, the smile cookie campaign has raised $111 million for charities across North America. On top of that, the cookies are pretty dang good, so that’s an added bonus.
GOOD NEWS – Sports Bra, a pub for women’s sports fans, plans national expansion as interest booms
If you think sports bars are a little too masculine, and could use the slightest bit of a feminine touch, you’re in luck! A female-oriented sports bar based out of Oregon is looking to take their product national. The ‘Sports Bra’ – yes, that is the name – focuses on women’s sports. You can drink a pint, eat a cheeseburger, and watch women’s basketball, lacrosse, volleyball, etc. all on giant TVs. This national expansion follows a boom in college women’s basketball, which had higher TV ratings than the Men’s March Madness. So, if you want to watch Caitlin Clark drain 3s for the Indiana Fever while getting some food and drinks with friends, you might have a place coming to a plaza nearish you… And that’s some good news!
Taylor Swift Does It Again, Tops Billboard 200 Album Chart With New Record
It’s time for another edition of ‘WHAT RECORD DID TAYLOR SWIFT BREAK THIS TIME?’ Welcome back. Today, we’re looking at the Billboard 200 Album Chart, which saw the debut of Swift’s newest album (The Tortured Poets Department) at #1. This chart uses all metrics to gauge public interest, including streaming, physical sales, and digital sales. It’s her 14th album to make it to the top of this list, tying her with Jay-Z for most all time by a solo artist. She’s now five albums behind The Beatles for the all-time record, solo or band. She already holds the record for most #1 albums for a female artist. The album is the most streamed album within its first week of all time, and it has no signs of slowing down. So, thank you so much for tuning in for today’s edition of ‘WHAT RECORD DID TAYLOR SWIFT BREAK THIS TIME?’ I’m sure we’ll have another edition in the near future because, boy, does she ever break a lot of records.
KFC to launch a perfume
If you thought KFC was “finger lickin’ good” then get ready to be “finger smellin’ good”… I regret that already. Kentucky Fried Chicken is launching a perfume. They’re calling it “eau de BBQ” and it will smell of smoke, charcoal, and marinating meat. It’s being launched alongside a new menu item, called the ‘Ultimate BBQ Burger’. That’s all available as of this week, so if you want to eat some meat while smelling like meat, KFC is the place to be.
Exactly how much you should sit, stand, walk and sleep for optimal health
You might have heard that sitting is bad for you, with people saying sitting is the latest epidemic. Your body is meant to be moving, and experts back that up with numbers. Researchers from Swinburne University of Technology in Australia say that for optimal health, you should be off your butt a lot more than you might be doing currently. They’ve released an “ideal time breakdown” for sitting, standing, walking, and sleeping:
- You should sleep eight hours a day
- You should stand for at least five hours a day
- You should have four hours a day of light to moderate physical activity
- You should should sit for just six hours a day.
How does that sound to you? Does that match your schedule? Will you be getting up and moving around the office from now on? If there was ever a week to go out for a lunchtime walk, this might be the one!
