The ballot for Milton’s by-election is starting to fill up.
On Wednesday, April 3rd, the provincial government called the by-elections for Milton and Lambton–Kent–Middlesex. From a local standpoint, our by-election comes after Milton MPP Parm Gill resigned from his position to join Pierre Poilievre and the Conservative Party in the next federal election, running against incumbent Milton MP Adam van Koeverden.
Following the announcement of the by-election yesterday, the Ontario Greens shared who their candidates will be for both ridings. Milton will be represented by Kyle Hutton. Here’s what the Party had to say about their candidate:
“Kyle Hutton is a long-time Halton resident who has been a member of the Green movement since 2019, when he was drawn in by the ideal of a sustainable, equitable and affordable future for Ontarians.
“A community activist, volunteer and experienced campaigner, Kyle believes the key to creating a better Ontario is by tackling the climate crisis at its source – the industries and norms that fuel consumption, put production ahead of the planet, and profits over people in an unsustainable cycle.”
Late last night, the NDP announced their candidates for the by-elections. Edie Strachan will represent Milton, having been elected at a general membership meeting. The NDP wrote about their candidate:
“[Strachan] has lived in Milton for many years and has seen the struggles caused by rapid growth. A long time NDP member and activist, she also serves on other NGOs as well as helping to run her union local.
“[Strachan] plans to attend any and all candidate debates she is invited to, unlike our now retired MPP who did not attend any debates. She plans to inform the public with leaflets and signs without overloading mailboxes with flyer after flyer and creating eye sores with carpet bombing signs often placed too close to polling stations.”
They will go up against Zeeshan Hamid of the Progressive Conservatives, and Galen Naidoo Harris of the Ontario Liberal Party.
Voting day will be on Thursday, May 2nd. Advancing polling and mail-in options will be available.
