The Ontario Liberal Party has announced their candidate for Milton in the upcoming local by-election.
It was rumoured for months that the provincial Liberals would choose their new leader, Bonnie Crombie, as the candidate for Milton. They announced on Monday, March 25th that the spot will go to Galen Naidoo Harris.
He has the pedigree for the position, as his mother Indira Naidoo-Harris was the Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Milton from 2014-2018, losing to Parm Gill and the Progressive Conservative Party after one term.
It’s been a journey for the Miltonian, who has run in past elections for Town Council and had a bid for the Ontario Liberals in the 2020 election. That spot was filled by current Regional Councillor for Milton’s Ward 4, Sameera Ali.
Naidoo Harris will take on Conservative candidate, Zeeshan Hamid, in the by-election. The NDP have not announced a candidate, nor have the Green Party.
The by-election is being held after Milton MPP Parm Gill resigned earlier this year. He vacated his position to join Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives for the next federal election. He’ll remain in Milton to compete for current Member of Parliament Adam van Koeverden’s spot. The next federal election is expected by October 2025, but could occur earlier if announced.
No timeline has been officially shared for the Milton by-election.
