What else did we talk about this morning?
ICYMI – Culture Days returning to Milton for another year
With all of spring and summer still to go, Ontario Culture Days has announced that Milton, Oakville and Burlington will be among the communities taking part in the annual festival this fall. It’s a great way to showcase local talent. The several week long festival will begin September 20th. It usually takes place at the FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton, with recent years even spreading throughout the streets of Milton.
Daily WTF – Man Ordered to Remove Shipping Container and Floating Docks from Lake Worth Lagoon after Violating Rivers and Harbors Act
Turns out, you can’t just claim land as your own, even if that land is actually water. A man in Florida created a home for himself when he put floating docks and a shipping container out onto a lagoon. These things weighed over 100,000 pounds altogether, and this man had a hard time controlling them. The U.S. District Court has now ruled against the man, saying he needs to find a new place to live. They say he’s basically trespassing on US waters by trying to live on a lagoon without any authorization – and with his lack of control, he’s putting himself and others at risk. Does U-Haul rent out moving boats? They probably should!
Spring finally begins, it’s just a few days late
We got the first day of spring last week, and we were immediately met with freezing temperatures and snow. As we start a new week, we’re looking at sunny skies and potentially double digit highs. It’s finally spring! Make sure you get out today, work on your garden, get some exercise in, and take in that fresh air… Because very soon it’ll be unbearably hot… and you’ll be counting down the days until September/October. Have fun!
Daily Did You Know – The history behind Milton’s Cottrelle Place and Solomon Court
Each week, Milton Historical Society President John Challinor details the origins of select local street names. We covered Cottrelle Place and Solomon Court this week, which are named after a Milton resident who played a pivotal role in World War Two for Canada, as well as a former Milton Mayor. We’ll have two more street names next week!
What we know about Kate Middleton’s cancer diagnosis right now
The Royal Family finally opened up about why Princess Catherine has been hiding from the press the last few months. There’s been some strange behaviour regarding Kate Middleton and everyone at Buckingham Palace, and on Friday afternoon, she posted a video that detailed why exactly that’s been the case: she has cancer. Her diagnosis came shortly after her father-in-law, King Charles, was also diagnosed. The Princess of Wales says she is well, and is undergoing treatment. Back in January, she underwent surgery that Buckingham Palace described as a non-cancerous procedure. Shortly after, tests found cancer, and she’s been undergoing treatment ever since. Middleton didn’t say what kind of cancer she had, or the severity of it. It’s worth noting, King Charles also hasn’t disclosed that information for himself, either. So, there we go! We have our answer, and now that we know, hopefully she and the family can get some space for the time being.
100 Women Who Care Milton will donate to a local charity in April
If you’re looking to make some friends while helping out a local charity, the 100 Women Who Care Milton want to hear from you! They’re holding another meeting in April. The group will hear from three local non-profit organizations. They will then vote, and the selected charity will be awarded a donation from each member. The Lighthouse for Grieving Children and Families received the funds at January’s meeting – they’ll be back in April for a presentation on where/how the money was used. All three presenting charities will be announced at the meeting. It’ll be held at Boston Pizza in Milton on Wednesday, April 10th. New members are welcomed.
Facebook users are rediscovering the ‘poke’
If you’ve been on Facebook for more than a decade, then you remember the ‘poke’ feature. Well, apparently Meta says the feature is thriving with younger audiences, adding that, specifically, Gen Zers are LOVING it. The feature was a key part of Facebook when it first launched in 2004. It’s a button that you press to “nudge” the person you’re trying to get ahold of, serving as a reminder that you exist. It’s seen a 13x spike in the last month among users 18-29. I might be in that demographic, but I had a hard time even finding the poke button on my Facebook feed, so I guess I’m old now. When was the last time you used the poke feature on Facebook, and will you ever use it again? If you want to be hip, you might have to start using it!
‘The Sims’ movie is in the works by Margot Robbie’s production company
Margot Robbie is really feeling herself after the success of ‘Barbie’. She took a gamble on a very unique film, and she’s looking to recreate that magic. Her production company is reportedly looking to make a very beloved video game into a movie. That game is ‘The Sims’! One of the most played video game franchises of all time, the iconic ‘Sims’ games will get a chance at the big screen, tackling all things life simulator. If you’re wondering just how they’ll make The Sims into a movie, just remember: that is exactly what everyone thought when the Barbie movie was announced… So, buckle up, and touch up on your Simlish.
You’re not in love with your co-worker — you just have ‘office goggles’, says relationships pro
One of the biggest office faux pas that you can commit is dating a coworker. That said, it happens surprisingly often. A lot of people spend more time at work than they do at home with their partner. When you spend all that time with other people, you might become attached to them. Relationship experts say you might not be in love with that person you see every day, you’re just wearing “office goggles.” Their best advice for people currently thinking they’re in love with Phil from Accounting is to take a step back, and think “Would I be this into Phil if I met him on the street?” If you can look at the person in front of you objectively, you might realize that you’re just not that into Phil… And you might save your job and current relationship in the process.
‘Happy Gilmore 2’ Script Is Written
After nearly 30 years, Adam Sandler is looking to bring back the Happy Gilmore character. It’ll be through his deal with Netflix, according to Deadline. The actor who plays Shooter McGavin, Christopher McDonald, says the script is ready to go. No timeline is given, but could very well be ready for the 30-year anniversary in 2026. Happy Gilmore was one of three VHS’s that I bought when my local video store went out of business. Super Video 99 at the corner of John Street and Mountainview Road in Georgetown. It was my eighth birthday and I was able to get Happy Gilmore, Anaconda, and the Digimon movie for five bucks. It was the height of luxury for an 8-year-old in 2002. So, yeah, I’ll be watching Happy Gilmore 2 when it comes out, even if it’s the worst movie ever made…
