A Halton resident is looking to train the next generation of soccer players.
19-year old Ryan Bouchard just returned from playing professional soccer in Argentina. He’s also the owner of Optimal Soccer Training.
Bouchard says he’s happy knowing he’s helping local kids get better.
The goal for Bouchard is ultimately to continue playing professional soccer. He had a brief stint recently in 2018/2019, playing for the Argentinian team Ferro Carril Oeste. He was also invited to try out for 1st Division clubs Aldosivi (Argentina), and Penarol (Uruguay). Prior to leaving for Argentina, he was named Captain for Team Ontario and was playing with York University’s Men’s team at 17-years old.
That said, his focus right now is on providing the best help to as many kids as possible, whether that is on the field or off. He wants to be a mentor to the kids he trains.
Bouchard feels that there is a missing piece in the Canadian Men’s Soccer System. He says that a lot of players under the age of 13/14 are on-par with worldwide talent, but they routinely miss out on a crucial development stage after that. He commends Toronto FC and their farm system for what they’ve done to develop players, but adds that there needs to be more.
He says there is an unbelievable amount of untapped potential in Canada, it’s just a matter of getting those younger players in the right hands at the right age.
