October is Islamic Heritage Month.
Thursday, October 21st will be a virtual event for residents to learn more about Islam. Director of Advocacy with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at, Maqbool Sheikh, says it’s a great event for non-muslim residents.
Islamic Heritage Month was first declared by the federal government in 2007. Sheikh feels that having these months set aside for education and awareness allows for groups to put an emphasis on teaching the uninformed about history and culture.
He says it’s always best to learn about a culture from the people within the culture.
When there’s a lot of misinformation and what he calls ‘fake news’ in the world, it magnifies the need for educating residents who may not understand the religion of Islam.
You can attend the virtual event yourself. It’s free to register and you can do so here. It starts at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 21st.
