A Commercial Vehicle Inspection Blitz is underway at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Halton Police is making sure to inspect each commercial truck that makes its way through the area. Constable Ryan Anderson says they’re just making sure the roads are safe.
The big offender on Tuesday morning was a truck that came in 17,000 kg overweight.
This is what happens when your dump truck is 17,000 kg (yes, you read that right) overweight.
This vehicle is also sporting a contaminated brake line which means it is now out of service until it is repaired. #CMVblitz pic.twitter.com/DSbeJibW4G

Constable Anderson hadn’t seen the truck at the time of the interview. He says from what he heard, you could see the stress of the weight in the truck’s tires.
Many residents driving through the area may notice the flashing lights. Constable Anderson says don’t worry.
This is the 20th year for the CMV inspection blitz. Looking at the numbers year over year, Constable Anderson feels the trend is looking upwards.
The results for 2020 are:
- Total commercial motor vehicles inspected: 340
- Total commercial motor vehicles taken out of service: 96 (28% failure rate)
- Total charges laid: 250
- Sets of licence plates seized by police: 7
2019 Results (for comparison):
- Total commercial motor vehicles inspected: 305
- Total commercial motor vehicles taken out of service: 99 (33% failure rate)
- Total charges laid: 239
- Sets of licence plates seized by police: 11
Something that began in 2019 is the mandatory impaired driving testing that takes place at these inspections.
He adds that the drivers are typically easy to work with. “They’re professionals,” says Constable Anderson. “They understand this is part of the job and so they do their best.”
You may wonder, with these being commercial vehicles, who gets hit with the charge if the truck fails the inspection? Constable Anderson says there are a range of charges that could be laid. Some are the drivers’ responsibilities, but some do fall on the owner of the truck. He calls it a case by case situation.
The blitz will continue for Wednesday, October 5th.
