The Milton Good Neighbours Day event has been cancelled for the second year in a row.
The annual cleanup event is traditionally the first Saturday in May. That would have been tomorrow (Saturday, May 1st).
Alex Wellstead is part of the organizing committee. He says the pandemic has made it infeasible to hold the event.
He hopes that maybe next year, we will see hundreds of residents back out and cleaning the streets together. Next year would also mark 30-years of doing the event, which would be a nice milestone to restart on.
While Milton Good Neighbours Day is technically cancelled, there’s nothing stopping you from picking up litter this weekend. Wellstead says that if you’re going out to clean up your neighbourhood, follow health and safety protocols.
He asks that residents stick with members of their household if they are planning to be cleaning with others.
Wellstead mentions that he’s heard from residents that there is an uptick in litter since the pandemic began. He doesn’t believe residents are wasting more, but rather that it’s things like disposable masks laying about.
He knows a few people who take a garbage bag with them on walks. That way, they can pick up litter whenever they come across it. It’d be great if others could do the same.
