You can help the Canadian Federation of University Women in raising donations for menstrual products.
The CFUW is teaming up with the Khi Community Milton Salvation Army on International Women’s Day (Monday, March 8th).
Chair of Advocacy with CFUW Milton & District Kathy Sellers says that money raised on March 8th will go towards fighting period poverty.
When people are struggling to afford the necessities in life, hygiene products are often the first to be removed from shopping lists. These products are also the least donated items to food banks despite being the most needed.
Sellers says the goal is to help the woman in our town that might be struggling to afford feminine hygiene products.
She adds that a woman will spend an estimated $6000 on menstrual products in her lifetime. She says that a mother with two teenage girls – who might be earning minimum wage – would be struggling to afford food, let alone necessary hygiene products, adding “people simply don’t think of this as a necessary item for women to live” when discussing the lack of donations to food banks.
The campaign for International Women’s Day this year is ‘#ChooseToChallenge’. To celebrate and honour women’s achievements, as well as show your support for continued and improved equal rights for women, you can take a selfie of yourself with one hand raised. Sellers says the notion is to say “Yes, I will choose to challenge gender inequality.” You can then submit the pictures by using the hashtags #ChooseToChallenge or #IWD2021 on Monday, March 8th.
At the time of the interview, there have been at least 134 people who have submitted their pictures to CFUW Milton & District, who will use the images for an online collage following International Women’s Day.
