Police forces across Ontario are asking residents to voluntarily comply with the Province’s Stay-at-Home order.
In a news release, the Ontario Provincial Police says its officers will enforce the order by focusing on non-compliance in businesses and restaurants, complaints from the public, and outdoor gatherings of more than five people.
It says officers can disperse and ticket individuals found to be non-compliant. Those failing to comply could face fines, prosecution, and even imprisonment.
The OPP says officers will not arbitrarily stop an individual or a vehicle, or enter a dwelling for the singular purpose of checking compliance with the order.
Individuals are not expected to provide proof of essential work but officers can ask an individual to identify themselves if they have reasonable grounds to believe the individual is violating the order.
The OPP asks residents to not dial 9-1-1 if they have a question about the Stay-at-Home order or other COVID-related matters.
It suggests people go to the Government of Ontario website to learn more.
