The Liberals pledge to connect 98 per cent of Canadians to high speed internet by 2026.
It’s an ambitious task considering the country’s sparsely populated landmass, but the Minister of Seniors, Deb Schulte, says COVID-19 has exposed the urgency for high speed internet access.
The announcement caused a stir on Twitter, with many Canadians criticising the Trudeau government for not prioritizing clean drinking water for First Nations communities over high speed internet access.
To which Schulte responded: “Why not do both?”
Schulte went on to say since taking office, the feds have removed 90 drinking water bans across Canada.
The feds will begin accepting project proposals from municipalities, First Nations communities, provinces and territories.
1.7 billion is earmarked for the project which will cover 75% of infrastructure costs.
The Ontario government made a similar promise through the announcement of its 2020 Budget. You can read more on that here.
