COVID-19 is changing this year’s Remembrance Day ceremony.
There won’t be a parade in Milton this year.
However, President of the Milton Legion Branch, Don Hipwell, says the ceremony is still on.
Unfortunately, this year’s Poppy Campaign had to be altered due to COVID-19. Cadets are no longer lining up at local businesses to hand out poppies in exchange for donations. Hipwell says you can still buy your poppy at several stores, such as Tim Hortons.
The money raised with the Poppy Campaign goes to support the Legion’s veterans, as well as fund programs like the many Cadet programs in Milton. Hipwell adds that the Legion also gives back throughout the year with the help of donations made by residents. He says the more the Legion gets, the more everyone else in Milton will receive.
A bench was recently donated to Milton’s #136 Legion Branch. The bench was then polished up, painted, and placed in the Evergreen Cemetery on Milton’s Ontario Street. You can read more on that here.
While it has been a hard year for everyone, it remains important for education to be a focus for our youth. Hipwell speaks on the importance of having the young residents of Milton learn about the sacrifices made by Canadian soldiers over the years.
According to Hipwell, the Legion is still figuring out how to best utilize the online aspect of things. Therefore, the best way to donate directly to the Legion is to buy a poppy and donate through the poppy boxes.
The Legion is also selling poppy face masks with the help of a local business. Read about it here.
myFM News has another story in the works on poppies here in Milton. Keep your eyes peeled on that story coming within the week.
