This Saturday is Halloween and it’s important to be mindful of fire safety.
myFM News spoke with the Chief of the Milton Fire Department, Peter Gatto, to get some advice to use this weekend.
He says avoid candles if you can.
Chief Gatto adds that you should watch where you put your decorations when leaving lit candles outside or around jack-o’-lanterns. He says they can catch fire easily and could lead to disastrous results.
Some more advice from Gatto is to use any indoor lighting fixtures how the manufacturer intended. He says a lot of time people will buy lights and plug them in without reading the instructions. He says the wrong light could lead to sparks, and potentially a fire. Also, make sure to not block entry and exit ways with decorations. They should always be clear in case of an emergency.
Chief Gatto has been in the firefighting industry for 30-plus years. He says Halloween can be a dangerous time of the year if you’re not careful.
He adds that there is always an increase in traffic on Halloween. Fortunately, this year is on a Saturday, so that could limit some of the vehicles on the road. However, if you and your child are going trick-or-treating this year, make sure they are visible to motorists. Flashlights, reflective vests, and glow sticks are all handy – especially with it being dark by 6:00 p.m..
Happy Halloween from myFM! Stay safe, be well, and have fun – in any way that you can this year.
