
The Milton Sports Hall of Fame has announced there most recent inductions for the 2020 class.
Five inductees have been elected into Milton’s hallowed sports hall, in both the athlete and builder category.
The vote took place in June, at a meeting of the Board of Directors in Milton, where nominations submitted by the public at large were considered.
Rod McLachlan, with the Sports Hall of Fame, says that the candidates share similar characteristics.
McLachlan says that some of the members were even able to share the news in person.
For the first time ever, two women will be recognized in the same class, doubling the number of female inductees in the Hall overall.
As for whether it will take place, McLachlan says they are taking a wait and see approach.
The inductees include;
Bill Rowney has been involved in minor hockey for many years in Milton. He is recognized in the community as the ultimate hockey volunteer, with an all-encompassing passion and dedication for the sport that has manifested itself in multiple ways, including for over 40 years as a volunteer with the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA).
Martha and Pat Gleeson are considered the “birth parents” of basketball in Milton. After discovering a serious lack of basketball programs in the town, the Gleesons started a program at the YMCA before
expanding to create what would be known as Monarch Basketball.
Darlene Kranstz is a four-time world Jiu-Jitsu champion (1988, 1992, 1995, 1996), a North American champion (1989), and was inducted into the Canadian Black Belt Hall of Fame in 1995. She is the 1994 Canadian Jiu-Jitsu Instructor of the Year and was inducted into the World Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 1992. Krantz is ranked as a 7th-degree black belt with the title of Shihan.
Steve Condren is one of the most respected and recognized drivers in Canadian harness racing history. Condren has been associated with the Mohawk Racetrack for over 30 years. He was the leader of the Ontario Jockey Club as its top driver for multiple years throughout the ’80s, 90’s, and 2000’s. He has won an incredible 6,859 races, driving home winners to a combined $114 million.
Travis Gerrits is a freestyle aerial skier who has represented Milton throughout North America and around the world. He was named Federation Internationale de Ski (FIS) Rookie of the Year in 2011. In 2012-13 he captured a silver medal at the Freestyle World Ski Championships.
