
Seniors in Canada could see a little more cash in their bank accounts.
The Federal Government’s rollout of the Old Age Security (OAS) pension, with an additional $200 for seniors eligible for the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), will hit bank accounts this week.
Minister of Seniors Deb Schulte explains how they will get the money to seniors.
Minister Schulte lets seniors know what they can do if there is a delay.
She adds that they have been working with all political parties to ensure that seniors get the support they need.
This measure would give a total of $500 to individuals who are eligible to receive both the OAS and the GIS, and will help them cover increased costs caused by COVID-19.
Close to 85% of single seniors and almost half of senior couples benefited from this payment.
Included in the support are investments into programs that will help seniors access basic needs.
The government will be expanding the New Horizons for Seniors Program with an additional investment of $20 million to support organizations that offer community-based projects that reduce isolation, improve the quality of life of seniors, and help them maintain a social support network.
