The Halton District School Board approved of a student led climate emergency declaration, the first of its kind.
The school board’s student body, student trustee mentors, the Halton environmental team and the school board’s student senate of 90 students across the board’s 70 schools led the charge.
Halton District School Board Student Trustee, Matthew Burnes, says this has been a year long effort.
He talks about the importance of having the school board pass the motion.
Burnes adds that in passing this declaration they are uniting the board’s mission with the mission of all the municipalities behind it that are already doing the work.
Halton District School Board Student Trustee, Olivia Lau, says they are excited to see that the board are willing to incorporate student voice.
Currently, the students are helping get the student elect ready for the next year and are working on creating an environmental student of excellence award to recognize student achievement and those who are passionate about the environment.
