The Halton Down Syndrome Association’s annual walk is moving online.
The COVID-19 outbreak forced the hand of organizers. Last year, the event raised over $130,000 with more than 1,500 participants at the Milton Fairgrounds; however, a gathering that size was not possible for 2020.
Rebecca Hurren is one of the coordinators for the Halton ‘Virtual’ Walk for Down Syndrome. She says they didn’t want to just cancel the 8th annual walk.
The shift to online allows for the HDSA to get creative with what they want to do this weekend.
With #HDSAWalk2020, people can show off their blue and yellow costumes. The HDSA is also asking people to take part in sidewalk art by using chalk to colour the pavement.
There will be a lot to take in on Saturday, aside from the walk itself.
Hurren says the participants have shown a lot excitement for the walk.
Make sure you get involved this weekend as the goal is to raise $90,000 and spread the event globally.
More than 40 teams have registered and they’ve reached 78% of their goal as of the time of writing. The weather is expected to be great, which can only mean good things for the participants.
The Halton ‘Virtual’ Walk for Down Syndrome will take place on Saturday, starting at 10:00 a.m. with an opening ceremony video on their Facebook page. There will be a DJ playing music for people and the event will finish with a closing awards ceremony at 4:00 p.m..
The silent auction is expected to go live at 1:00 p.m..
Walkers are asked to walk for 21-minutes to represent trisomy 21.
You can register here.
