Milton Town Council received a report for information asking for a temporary zoning bylaw amendment that would allow up to 60 portables at Jean Vanier Secondary School.
This amount of portables could be needed as Milton waits for a new high school to be funded by the province.
Jean Vanier would be adding 22 portables to the 38 they currently have.
If the Town supports this they will have to provide parking on streets and other parking lots and there will be shuttle buses that will take students and their teachers to and from.
The other option for the school board, if this zoning bylaw isn’t amended, is to send students to schools in neighbouring municipalities, Oakville and Burlington.
Town Councillor for Ward 4, Sameera Ali, shares her concerns, wanting to keep our students in Milton.
Parking is a big concern for both councillors and parents. Regional Councillor Zeeshan Hamid and Councillor Ali share their thoughts on what would be the solutions they’d recommend.
The Halton Catholic District School Board has applied for funding from the province more than once and each time have been declined.
Councillor Hamid stresses the need for the province to get on with funding the project.
During the meeting Councillor Ali also stressed the need for the province to work on downloading the necessary funds to finally get construction underway.
Now that the report has been received, Councillor Hamid explains the next steps.
Councillor Ali adds that it is too soon to say what will happen.
She has asked staff to include mitigation measures for the surrounding area’s traffic issues and include that in both their traffic report and future recommendations.
