The Federal Government announced a ban on certain types of assault rifles weeks ago, some members of the gun community are up in arms.
Member of Canada’s National Firearm Association, Charles Zach, gives us his reaction to the announcement.
The new laws would make it illegal to sell, transport, import or use 1,500 varieties of assault weapons.
The ban is effective immediately but there will be a two-year amnesty period for law-abiding gun owners to comply.
Milton MP Adam van Koeverden says that while talking to people, this was something that most Canadians favour.
However, Zach says that he doesn’t agree with the numbers.
Zach adds that it’s not the gun that’s the issue.
MP van Koeverden says that this ban will take away the guns from people who use them illegally.
Adding that this new legislation should not be viewed as a punishment.
While Canada doesn’t have the right to bear arms, Zach believes that people should have the right to defend themselves.
MP van Koeverden says that the types of guns that are banned were chosen for a reason.
Some of the models that are being banned include;
- M16, AR-10, AR-15 rifles and M4 carbine
- Ruger Mini-14 rifle
- US Rifle M14
- Vz58 rifle and CZ858 rifle
- Robinson Armament XCR rifle
- CZ Scorpion EVO 3 carbine and pistol
- Beretta Cx4 Storm carbine
- SIG Sauer SIG MCX
- SIG Sauer SIG MPX carbines and pistols
- Swiss Arms Classic Green
- Four Seasons series rifles
The government official said that, at the end of the two-year amnesty, gun owners must dispose of the firearm or they may be able to apply for the firearm to be ‘grandfathered’.
Details on the grandfather process would be released at a later date.
