The House of Commons will be returning for a special session on Tuesday.
The session is set to convene at noon where members will vote on the benefits package that the Liberal government has proposed.
Some of those benefits include boosting the Canada child benefit temporarily for families, as well as increasing GST credit payments and increasing support for people who do not qualify for EI.
The Prime Minister also stated that the government has been working with Canadian airlines to bring Canadians home from abroad, which should occur in the days ahead.
Trudeau was tight lipped on how long these measures will continue for, saying that it’s the federal government’s job to step in only when the measures taken by local municipalities and provincial governments begin to fail.
Reporters asked the PM if the government had considered subsidizing businesses to continue to pay employee’s salary, rather than put additional stress on Canada’s EI system. The Prime Minister replied that “all options are on the table”
The federal government reports that there are over 1300 cases as of the morning of March 22nd.
