Police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre are reminding residents that scammers and fraudsters are relentless.
This comes after a phone call started making the rounds demanding that you divulge your Social Insurance Number or risk facing severe consequences.
Police say they are unable to stop the calls from being made, you can block them but they will just use a different number.
Jeff Thomson is a Senior RCMP Anti-Fraud Intelligence Analyst with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
He says if you do get this call or anything similar sounding, it’s a scam.
Thomson says one thing to keep in mind is there is no government agency in Canada that accepts Google Play, Apple or iTunes cards as a form of payment.
He says there is no officer on the other end of the line and one thing to keep in mind is how payment is requested by the fraudster.
He says if you receive an urgent call about your Social Insurance Card, use the three R approach. Recognize, Reject, Report.
He says if you do receive a call, email or text demanding payment of any kind, take a moment to make sure you know who you are dealing with and if you suspect it is a scammer, hang up.
