
Council chambers were filled with delegates and concerned Miltonians who wanted to hear the final decisions on the 2020 budget.
Topics ranged from the need for a sustainability officer, to more tree coverage, a possible Steeles bus and grade 5 students from Viola Desmond Elementary school advocating for the need for a 3D crosswalk to reduce speed in school zones.
One of delegate, Wendy Roberts’, main objectives was to get support from councillors to plant 1600 trees in 2020.
Roberts’ presentation included a total cost of what it would take to plant 1600 trees.
According to her, the total cost is over 650 thousand dollars with a net increase to the proposed budget of $467,872.
Grade Five students from Viola Desmond elementary school, made a presentation advocating the need for a 3D crosswalk to reduce speed and protect students in the area.
The town’s engineering commissioner, Paul Cripps, gives us an idea of when the Town could see some movement on this proposal.
One delegate, Doug Tripp a representative of the Concerned Residents Coalition came to the Town asking for their support in the fight against the hidden quarry that is located on Highway 7.
They are asking the town for a $10,000 grant that matches the Town’s 2016 donation to the cause in order to help them make up for the costs lost due to the applicant’s error during hearings that resulted in the hearing being adjourned.
Councillor Kristina Tesser Derksen asked the delegate just how much the applicant’s error cost them.
Other topics addressed by delegates include a possible Steeles Bus and the need for the Town to hire a sustainability and energy manager.
