Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at a rally in Milton, October 2019
Liberal Leader and current Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau was in Milton on Saturday afternoon.
Swarmed by a sea red in the Milton Banquet Hall on Steeles Avenue, the event began with speeches from Finance Minister Bill Morneau and local candidate in the federal election, Adam van Koeverden. The Barenaked Ladies’ singer Ed Robertson then sang ‘Oh Canada’ before calling Trudeau to the stage.
The Prime Minister spoke for 15-minutes in both English and French.
He touched on his relationship with van Koeverden.
Trudeau reflected on the last four years and the election that preceded it all.
He then shifted to focusing on this election, with a comment on the Conservatives.
He mentions potential cuts with an elected Scheer-Conservative government. He compares the budget cuts to the past year in Ontario with a Doug Ford government.
The Liberal Leader says this election is all about the future, more so than the present or the past. He touches on investing and fighting climate change.
Trudeau reminds the crowd of when the Liberals were the opposition under a Stephen Harper- Conservative government. He says it was frustrating to see climate change ignored as a major issue, and also breaks down the many ways he considers a progressive government to be a positive thing.
Speaking of climate change, he zeroes in on the many ways the Liberal government has worked on, and plans on continuing in the fight against climate change.
The conversation shifts towards an allegory with the Liberal candidate in Markham. He uses the story to relay the message that fighting climate change is the most important thing moving forward, alongside several other items from the Liberal Party’s platform.
Trudeau touches very quickly on the issue of gun control and how he wants guns off of our streets.
The afternoon ended with a lesson Justin Trudeau was taught by his father, former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, about battling waves in a rocky canoe.
