The Halton Region says that a batch of mosquitoes that were trapped in Burlington during the first week of September tested positive.
This is the 8th batch of West Nile Virus positive mosquitoes for Halton this year.
West Nile Virus positive mosquitoes have been found in Milton, Halton Hills and Oakville this year.
Halton’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Hamidah Meghani, says that until the hard frosts of fall set in, residents should continue to protect themselves from bites and remove breeding sites.
The region says that mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus are more likely to breed in areas such as bird baths, plant pots, old toys, tires and any other location that holds water.
To protect yourself from bites:
* wear light coloured, long sleeved shirts and pants with tightly woven fabric.
* avoid being outdoors in the early morning or early evening.
* avoid extended periods of time in shady, wooded areas.
* get rid of water filled containers and objects around your home.
* change bird bath water at least once a week
* use approved insect repellent with Deet or Icaridin.
* keep window and door screens shut tight and make sure there aren’t holes or other openings.
