The issue of SNC Lavalin never seems to go away.
This came in the wake of the SNC Lavalin decision that leads to two Cabinet Ministers being kicked out of the Liberal Caucus.
Ethics Commissioner Mario Dion report stated that Prime Minister Trudeau used inappropriate power when it came to handling how then-current Attorney General Jody-Wilson Raybould handled the criminal case.
The Montreal engineering firm is facing bribery and fraud charges.
Locally, Milton MP Lisa Raitt says that she was happy more details came to the public.
Prime Minister Trudeau says that he accepts the report, but disagrees with some parts of it, stating that he was only looking out for Canadian jobs.
Raitt says that the Prime Minister has other options if he feels that strongly about the report.
Raitt, says that despite this being a national issue, locally she has heard some concerns.
Others who have chosen to run in the Fall Federal Election have also weighed in on the issue.
Green Party Candidate Eleanor Hayward is asking for more than just a report.
“I echo Green Party of Canada Leader Elizabeth May in calling for a more extensive inquiry, including an RCMP investigation. Deeper issues such as the extent of corporate influence over our democracy and lack of government transparency have been illuminated by the SNC-Lavalin scandal. Any government that truly believes in ethics and integrity would welcome such an inquiry” said Hayward.
People Party of Canada Candidate Percy Dastur says that Prime Minister Trudeau has clearly put corporations ahead of democracy.
” [Prime Minister] Trudeau has broken the trust of Canadians. His intentions were aligned to his party gaining popularity in Quebec as a savior of Canadian jobs at the expense of the independence of the judiciary which is the core foundation of democracy. No corporation is above the law. [Milton MP] Lisa Raitt, Deputy Leader of CPC [Conservative Party of Canada], mentions that the Cons [Conservatives] would have had a debate at the cabinet and a deal would have been made public to Canadians. This is not a real solution to the problem. Why give privileges to big corporations?” said Dastur.
Liberal Candidate Adam van Koeverden declined to comment on the report.
