Two batches of West Nile positive mosquitoes have been found in Oakville and Milton.
The Halton Region trapped their first batches of positive mosquitoes last week.
The Halton Region’s medical officer of health, Dr. Hamidah Meghani, says that Halton residents should “continue to protect themselves against mosquitoes and bites until the hard frosts of fall sets in.”
The Region says that mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus are more likely to breed in areas such as bird baths, plant pots, old toys, tires and any other location that holds water.
To protect yourself from bites:
* wear light coloured, long sleeved shirts and pants with tightly woven fabric.
* avoid being outdoors in the early morning or early evening.
* avoid extended periods of time in shady, wooded areas.
* get rid of water filled containers and objects around your home.
* change bird bath water at least once a week
* use approved insect repellent with Deet or Icaridin.
* keep window and door screens shut tight and make sure there aren’t holes or other openings.
