This week, the Lifesaving Society has been running National Drowning Prevention Week.
Drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional death among Canadians under 60+ years of age.
There are nearly 500 Canadians drowning in preventable water-related incidents every year.
Public Education Director with the Lifesaving Society, Barbara Byers, says the last two weeks in July and first two months of August have always been a bad time for drownings.
Byers adds that drowning is a fast and silent act.
She says movies depict people waving their arms and yelling for help when that isn’t usually the case.
Byers recommends that everyone should learn how to swim.
She also adds that you should always keep an eye on your children.
