The Milton Public Library (MPL) is inviting the community to attend a special ceremony honouring the service and sacrifice of First Nations, Inuit and Métis veterans.
Titled Preserving the Path: Honouring Indigenous Veterans, the commemorative gathering will take place on Friday, November 6th, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. at the Mattamy Theatre inside the FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton. The event is free and open to the public.
Indigenous Veterans Day is observed annually on Sunday, November 8th, and recognizes the contributions of Indigenous Peoples to Canada’s military history. Many Indigenous veterans served with courage and distinction despite facing significant barriers and inequities. Remembering their experiences provides an opportunity to reflect on their contributions and Canada’s history.
The ceremony will welcome Milton Mayor Gordon Krantz, retired Master Warrant Officer Floyd Powder, representing the Indigenous Veterans Initiative, Milton Public Library Indigenous Advisor Sherry Saevil and library CEO Sarah Douglas-Murray, alongside community members and local students.
Highlights will include a ceremonial dance by the White Family and the presentation of commemorative artwork by Jacquie Shaver. Shaver’s ceramic vase, featuring beaded poppies, honours her grandfather’s service during the Second World War and recognizes Indigenous veterans.
Students from Bruce Trail Public School will also contribute artwork to the gathering.
The event is made possible through financial support from Veterans Affairs Canada’s Commemorative Partnership Program.
Community members can register to attend here.
There will also be a Remembrance Day ceremony in Milton on Wednesday, November 11th, at 11:00 a.m., at Evergreen Cemetery on Ontario Street South.
