A 51-year-old Caledon man has been charged with sexual assault following a Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) investigation into a reported incident involving a teenage girl at a Burlington residence.
The victim contacted the HRPS in April to report being sexually assaulted by a man at a residence in Burlington.
Members of the HRPS Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Unit took over the investigation and learned that the victim had responded to a Kijiji advertisement posted by the accused seeking cleaning assistance at a construction site.
After accepting the position, the victim met with the man, who transported her to a residence undergoing renovations, where the alleged assault occurred. Police say the victim did not sustain any physical injuries.
On Monday, October 26th, Varinder Chahal was arrested and charged with one count of sexual assault. He was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court in Milton at a later date.
At the time of the reported assault, police say Chahal was working as a contractor under the business name Chahal Renovations.
Investigators are concerned there may be additional victims. The HRPS are asking anyone with information about the investigation, or anyone who believes they have been victimized by the accused, to contact the Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Unit at 905-825-4777, ext. 8970.
Police note that sexual assault involves touching of a sexual nature without consent or a violation of a person’s sexual integrity. There is no statute of limitations for reporting sexual assault, meaning incidents can be reported to police regardless of how long ago they occurred.
Anyone who has experienced violence or sexual assault can contact the Halton Regional Police Service Victim Services Unit at 905-825-4777 for support.
