The Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury will treat invasive phragmites at Middletown Pond this week, weather permitting.
The treatment will take place at 2691 Sideroad 10 on Tuesday, October 20th and Wednesday, October 21st. It will target Phragmites australis, also known as European common reed. The plant can spread rapidly and displace native vegetation.
The Town has hired a licensed exterminator to apply Habitat Aqua, a herbicide approved for aquatic use to control invasive phragmites. The necessary permits have been obtained from Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, and licensed professionals will carry out the work.
According to the treatment provider, there will be no restrictions on recreational water use following the treatment. Residents can continue to use the pond recreationally.
