The 2026 Municipal Election is less than 20 days away.
INDIE FM has reached out to all ten mayoral candidates for Milton to discuss their platforms and some key topics affecting residents.
Each candidate will be asked the same questions, and the interviews are being done on a first-come, first-served basis.
Here is our interview with mayoral candidate, Zainab Azim.
Q: Provide me an elevator pitch, a sort of quick breakdown, on your platform/campaign – why should Milton residents elect you as the next mayor?
Q: We’ll touch on a lot of those topics. One of those is the growth of Milton. You mentioned living here for 23 years, so I’d imagine you have seen that growth first-hand. Milton’s past council just approved the Official Plan, projecting the town all the way to 2051. With that Official Plan in mind, what is your plan for Milton’s growth, should you be elected in the coming weeks?
Q: You’ve already discussed job creation pretty heavily already, but I am asking the same questions to all candidates. So, would you like to share more about your plans for job creation, because a lot of people consider Milton as a ‘bedroom community’, where you live here but work elsewhere in the GTA?
Q: This next question is very similar to the last one, but slightly different. Sort of a “same boat, different lake”-situation. Supporting local really blew up in popularity as an ideal for Milton during the pandemic. We’re barely a half-decade removed from that, and it’s still a major focus for Miltonians. How would you support the already existing local businesses?
Q: I always try to find a hot topic to focus on for these election interviews. Last year, during the federal election, it was Canada’s relationship with the United States. In 2026, from a local perspective, it’s become artificial intelligence, and the potential development of data centres in our community. It’s gotten to the point that the previous council was addressing this possibility during meetings. Where do you stand on potential data centres in Milton, when considering all of the known negatives that come with them?
Q: This will be my third municipal election since I’ve started working with this station. What I’ve seen is that it becomes a sink-or-swim situation very early on. The annual budget is one of the first things needing to be worked on for Council. How are you planning to provide the services Miltonians want, while also keeping the taxes low for those same residents?
Q: Is there anything you’d like to address that I haven’t asked about?
