A Milton man is among four people facing charges following a Peel Regional Police investigation into an alleged vehicle registration fraud scheme linked to more than $100,000 in unpaid 407 ETR tolls.
Project Octane was launched in May 2026 by investigators with the Commercial Auto Crime Bureau. The investigation focused on the suspected use of fraudulent documents at several Service Ontario locations in connection with vehicle registrations and licence plates.
Police say further investigation found that plates were registered to fictitious companies, allowing users to avoid accountability while accumulating significant toll and parking fees.
As a result, 53-year-old Tariq Hameed of Milton has been charged with one count of using forged documents.
Three other individuals have also been charged.
31-year-old Haroon Qayumzada of Caledon faces one count of fraud over $5,000 and three counts of using forged documents.
35-year-old Gajan Karunanithy of Brampton faces two counts of using forged documents and possession of property obtained by crime.
37-year-old Ismail Ismail of Toronto faces one count of using forged documents.
As part of the investigation, officers recovered 10 re-vinned vehicles that were confirmed stolen, with an estimated combined value of $750,000.
The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Commercial Auto Crime Bureau at 905-453-2121, extension 3313.
