Halton Region Public Health is investigating a second confirmed case of measles after direct exposure to the first confirmed case in Milton.
Residents may have been exposed to the highly contagious virus at four locations in Milton, Etobicoke, Mississauga, and Oakville.
Potential exposure locations and times are:
- Kaha Masjid Khadijah, Milton Banquet Hall: 3090 Steeles Avenue West, Milton — September 4th from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Qahwah Cafe & Shisha Lounge: 3411 Lakeshore Boulevard West, Etobicoke — September 5th at 11:00 p.m. to September 6th at 3:30 a.m.
- Costco: 3180 Laird Road, Mississauga — September 8th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
- Real Canadian Superstore: 201 Oak Walk Drive, Oakville — September 8th from 7:30 p.m. to 10:15 p.m.
Anyone who visited the locations during the listed times is encouraged to check their immunization records to confirm they and anyone who accompanied them are up to date on measles vaccinations. Two doses are recommended for anyone born on or after January 1, 1970.
Infants under one year old, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems can become seriously ill from measles and should contact Halton Region Public Health or their healthcare professional immediately for further assessment.
Anyone who develops symptoms and needs to see a doctor should call the doctor’s office, walk-in clinic or emergency department ahead of time so healthcare staff can take precautions to reduce the risk of spreading the infection.
Residents who may have been exposed should monitor for symptoms for 21 days after exposure. Symptoms can appear seven to 21 days after contact with the measles virus and can include:
- fever
- cough
- runny nose
- red eyes
- sleepiness
- irritability
- small, white spots on the inside of the mouth (Koplik Spots)
- a red blotchy rash that first starts on the face and spreads down the body, arms, and legs (this rash can last 4 to 7 days)
