A Burlington community yoga event is returning this weekend to raise funds to help Halton students facing financial barriers.
Sunrise Yoga in the Park brings the community together for a morning of movement, reflection and giving in support of the Halton Learning Foundation (HLF). The event was launched in 2022 by organizer Adam Doering, who combined his passion for yoga with his support for HLF.
The event attracts more than 100 yoga enthusiasts each year and raised approximately $45,000 for HLF last year.
Funds raised this year will support the Mark Doering Thoughtful Fund at HLF, established in memory of Adam’s late brother. The fund will support HLF’s work helping students in the Halton District School Board access essentials such as food, clothing and school supplies, as well as opportunities to fully participate in school life.
The event will be led by Burlington yoga instructor Claudia Bauman and is free and open to everyone. Participants are encouraged to make a donation to HLF, a registered charity dedicated to helping HDSB students overcome financial barriers to learning.
“My commitment to HLF and to my brother Mark is to raise $1 million over the next few years to help ensure that all students have access to things like healthy lunches, proper gym clothes, or the opportunity to participate in a school team or field trip,” says Adam. “These are things many of us assume are available to all kids, but are actually out of reach for many families in our community.”
HLF says it responded to more than 2,600 requests from school staff for assistance during the 2025–26 school year. The organization provides grocery gift cards rather than pre-packed supplies, allowing families to purchase what their children need, including backpacks, shoes and healthy snacks.
They work directly with school staff to identify urgent student needs and typically provides assistance within 24 to 48 hours.
Sunrise Yoga in the Park takes place Saturday, September 12th at Spencer Smith Park in Burlington. To register or learn more, click here.
