Construction is underway on two new long-term care homes in Oakville that will provide space for 640 residents.
The homes, which will collectively be known as The Village of Heritage Trails, are being developed by Schlegel Villages through the Ontario government’s Surplus Lands program. The project includes 554 new beds and 86 upgraded spaces, creating two 320-bed homes.
The facilities will feature smaller resident living areas, with dining and activity spaces, as well as bedrooms for up to 32 residents. The homes will also be connected by a first-floor “main street” featuring a library, café, spiritual centre, health centre, spa, corner store, pharmacy and common areas.
Schlegel Villages also intends to include retirement housing in future development at the site, providing seniors with additional housing options.
The province says the project is expected to support about 1,000 jobs once the homes are operational, including nursing, personal support, nutrition, programming and administrative positions, while approximately 700 construction jobs are expected during the build.
The Village of Heritage Trails is expected to welcome its first residents in summer 2028.
