The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) is warning the public about a series of distraction thefts targeting older residents.
Suspects typically approach victims near their homes, on sidewalks or around retail businesses and ask for directions. After receiving help, one of the women may hug the victim or offer a so-called “good luck” necklace, while secretly removing the victim’s own jewellery.
The latest incident happened before 9:00 a.m. in an older neighbourhood near downtown Milton. Police say the victim’s medical alert device was also taken, along with jewellery.
The suspects are described by the HRPS as:
- two women
- one in her 20s and another in her 60s
- darker complexions
- black hair tied in buns
- wearing loose-fitting, silk-like clothing
- speaking with thick accents and limited English.
Police believe they may be driving an older-model grey Honda Odyssey.
They are urging seniors not to engage with strangers who suddenly approach them for directions or offer gifts, and are asking families to make sure older relatives are aware of the warning.
