Conservation Halton Foundation has received a $500,000 grant from the RBC Foundation to support a major retrofit of the Crawford Lake Interpretive and Education Centre in Milton.

The funding, provided through the RBC Foundation Community Spaces Grant, will help transform the centre into a more energy-efficient, climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable facility while improving accessibility, visitor experience, cultural heritage preservation and environmental education.

Located within Crawford Lake Conservation Area, part of UNESCO’s Niagara Escarpment World Biosphere Reserve, the Interpretive and Education Centre welcomes more than 100,000 visitors annually and serves as the gateway to the site’s meromictic lake and reconstructed 15th-century Longhouse Village.

Planned upgrades include high-performance insulation, new windows and doors, optimized heat pump systems, LED lighting, smart climate controls and improved ventilation to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

The project also includes accessibility improvements such as fully accessible pathways, entrances and gender-neutral washrooms, along with a new climate-controlled storage facility to help preserve part of Crawford Lake’s collection of approximately 10,000 Indigenous artifacts.
