The Milton Public Library has received $25,000 through the Ontario Seniors Community Grant Program.
They’ll be using this funding to launch Harmony for Healing, a new music therapy program aimed at supporting the health and well-being of older adults.
It will support weekly music therapy sessions from August 2026 through March 2027. Led by certified music therapists, the program will feature singing, rhythm exercises, and instrument play to promote emotional wellness, cognitive health, and social connection.
Harmony for Healing will also celebrate Milton’s diverse community by incorporating music from a variety of cultural traditions while encouraging intergenerational participation through youth volunteers.
The library says the program is designed to help reduce social isolation while supporting seniors’ mental health and cognitive wellness. Participants will also learn about the benefits of music for brain health and develop basic digital skills, including creating personalized music playlists they can continue using after the program ends.
Approximately 200 participants are expected to take part. The program will be delivered in partnership with community organizations supporting culturally diverse, newcomer, and LGBTQ2S+ seniors to help ensure it is accessible and welcoming.
“Our libraries are more than places to borrow books. They’re welcoming spaces where people feel connected and everyone has the chance to belong,” says Milton Public Library CEO Sarah Douglas-Murray, adding that the provincial funding will provide meaningful opportunities for older adults to connect, celebrate culture through music, and support their mental and emotional well-being.
Registration details and program dates will be announced in the coming months.
