Every Halton District School Board (HDSB) school participated in the EcoSchools program during the 2025-2026 school year.
This marks the first time all elementary and secondary schools across the board have taken part in the environmental initiative.
All 105 HDSB schools registered and submitted an EcoSchools Action Plan, up from 81 participating schools the previous year. Schools earned 90 EcoSchools certifications, while another 15 schools were recognized as participants.
Certification results included 28 Platinum, 43 Gold, 10 Silver and nine Bronze designations.
According to the HDSB, schools completed approximately 1,700 environmental actions during the school year, including 697 whole-school initiatives. Students also logged 41,800 hours of outdoor learning, diverted 254,100 kilograms of waste, planted 1,500 trees and helped sequester an estimated 288.52 tonnes of carbon dioxide through greening initiatives.

The EcoSchools program allows the HDSB to measure environmental action and sustainability efforts across its schools while supporting learning in subjects including science, mathematics, history, health and physical education, the arts and languages.
This achievement follows the opening of the HDSB’s Environmental Leadership Learning Centre, which is designed to support experiential environmental education, student leadership and staff professional learning. Guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the centre focuses on environmental learning, creative problem-solving and the use of emerging technologies to support sustainability.
The board says the EcoSchools framework helps students build literacy, numeracy, research and critical-thinking skills while supporting its commitment to environmental and global citizenship.
