Cricket players in Milton have a new place to train and practice following the opening of a dedicated cricket batting and pitching cage at Optimist Park.
Town officials, including Mayor Gord Krantz, Town staff and representatives from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG), gathered to mark the completion of the new facility, which was designed in response to growing interest in cricket within the community.
According to the Town, the project was developed through a planning and design process led by Parks staff that included consultation with local cricket enthusiasts, landscape architecture consultants and visits to facilities in neighbouring municipalities.
The new cricket cage features artificial turf designed to provide a consistent playing surface and a reinforced structure intended to accommodate frequent use. Additional park improvements include a new bench, a covered picnic table and landscaping surrounding the facility.
“This new cricket batting and pitching cage reflects Milton’s commitment to supporting the sports and activities our residents value,” says Mayor Krantz. “OLG’s support continues to help us invest in spaces and facilities that will serve our growing community for many years to come.”
The facility will be available for both drop-in use and organized programming.
Funding for the project included $137,187 from OLG through the Municipality Contribution Agreement (MCA), which provides funding to municipalities that host gaming facilities. Milton is a host community for Elements Casino Mohawk.
The Town reported receiving $6.35 million in casino gaming revenue from OLG during the 2026 fiscal year. Since the gaming site first opened in August 1999, OLG has provided approximately $155.3 million to Milton through the program.
The Town said annual contributions received through the Municipality Contribution Agreement help fund community improvements and programs. OLG funding is also distributed through grants that support local non-profit organizations, sports programs, arts initiatives, festivals and other community projects.
