Two Toronto women have been arrested in connection with a distraction robbery investigation that police say may be linked to similar incidents across Halton and several other jurisdictions.
The arrests stem from a February robbery in Toronto, but investigators believe the accused may also be connected to distraction thefts and robberies reported in Halton, Hamilton, Montreal and potentially other communities.
According to Toronto Police, the investigation began after a woman was robbed while sitting in her vehicle near Finch Avenue West and Woodbine Downs Boulevard in February.
Police allege the victim was approached by two suspects, one of whom handed her a fake iPhone and counterfeit jewellery in an effort to distract her. The suspects then allegedly attempted to remove the victim’s jewellery before forcibly taking gold chains from her neck. The victim suffered minor injuries and the suspects fled the area.
Following a months-long investigation, police identified two suspects and executed search warrants at their residences.
20-year-old Patricia Ghivea was arrested on May 31st and charged with:
- Robbery with Violence
- Conspiracy to Commit a Summary Offence
- Assault Peace of Public Officer
23-year-old Loredana Gardian was arrested on June 2nd and charged with:
- Robbery with Violence
- Conspiracy to Commit a Summary Offence
Police say distraction robberies often target older adults and vulnerable individuals in parking lots, shopping areas and other public spaces. In many cases, suspects use conversation, counterfeit jewellery or other items to distract victims before stealing valuables.
Investigators believe there may be additional victims and have released images of the accused as the investigation continues.
Police are reminding residents to remain alert when approached by strangers, particularly in parking lots and other public spaces. Authorities note that if someone is close enough to place jewellery around a person’s neck, they may also be close enough to steal valuables.
Anyone who believes they may have been a victim of a distraction robbery or has information about similar incidents is encouraged to contact Toronto Police or Crime Stoppers.
