Conservation Halton is recognizing National Indigenous History Month with the return of the Voices of the Land: Indigenous Peoples Speaker Series at Crawford Lake Conservation Area this June.
The month-long series returns for a second year and will feature Indigenous speakers, Knowledge Keepers, artists and community members sharing stories, teachings and perspectives rooted in culture, community and connection to the land.
One featured event is the Painted Feather Workshop with Moses Lunham on Sunday, June 7th from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at The Gathering Place. Lunham, an Anishinaabe artist from Kettle and Stony Point First Nation, will lead participants through a hands-on workshop where guests can paint their own wooden feather. The program also includes a live raptor visit for inspiration. Registration is required and the cost is $50 plus HST in addition to park admission.
The series will also include Teachings of Lacrosse on Sunday, June 14th at the Longhouse Village. Kevin Sandy of the Iroquois Lacrosse Program will present two one-hour sessions from noon to 1:00 p.m. and again from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., exploring the history, teachings and cultural significance of lacrosse through storytelling and demonstrations. The drop-in experience is suitable for ages five and older and is included with regular park admission or membership.
Voices of the Land events take place at Crawford Lake Conservation Area. Admission is free for Conservation Halton members, while non-members can reserve online.
