More than 620 students from across the Halton District School Board (HDSB) will take part in the 39th annual Special Athletics Track Meet on Friday, June 12th at Garth Webb Secondary School in Oakville.
The event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with opening ceremonies beginning at 10:00 a.m. and a closing parade scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Students with diverse physical and developmental abilities will participate in a range of activities including 100-metre races, basketball, T-ball, soccer, bowling, obstacle courses, bean bag tosses, and sensory stations.
Organizers say the event has grown significantly since it first launched in 1987 with just 12 athletes. Coaches, staff, volunteers, family members and peers will be on hand to support participants throughout the day.
The Oodenawi Public School Drumline will perform during the parade and host a drumming activity station, while Optimist Clubs from Halton Hills, Milton, Oakville and Burlington will provide a barbecue lunch. Student volunteers from Emily Carr Public School will also assist with the event.
