The Spring Economic Update 2026 is out and the federal government is making a big investment in athletics.
They’re investing $755 million over five years to expand access to sport and strengthen community recreation across Canada, including support for athletes, local sports organizations, and major sporting events.
Secretary of State for Sport and Burlington North-Milton West MP, Adam van Koeverden, highlighted the investment during a visit last weekend to the Mattamy National Cycling Centre, Milton’s world-class velodrome that supports both high-performance athletes and community recreation programs.
MP van Koeverden notes that this funding will help athletes at all levels, not just high-level Olympic performers.
The funding includes:
- $660 million over five years, plus $110 million ongoing, for sport organizations to expand participation opportunities for children and youth and strengthen safe sport initiatives.
- $50 million over five years to help Canada host more major international sporting events while supporting long-term community infrastructure improvements.
- $45 million over five years, plus $8 million ongoing, to support high-performance athletes with training, competition, mental health resources, and enhanced safe sport measures.
