A Barrie man is facing multiple charges after allegedly posting a video of dangerous driving on social media.
The investigation began after a video was shared on Instagram on Sunday, March 22nd, showing a driver speeding and engaging in unsafe behaviour. An officer who had conducted a traffic stop involving the same individual earlier that day recognized distinctive features in the video, including tattoos and vehicle details, linking it to the driver.
The video, recorded back on February 20th just before 3:30 a.m., shows the vehicle travelling along Leacock Drive at speeds exceeding 135 km/h in a posted 50 km/h zone. Police say the footage also shows the driver using a cellphone while driving and failing to stop at a stop sign at Letitia Street. Investigators were able to confirm the location using visible landmarks in the recording.
A 36-year-old Barrie man has been charged with:
- Driving while using a handheld communication device
- Stunt driving (excessive speed)
- Fail to stop at a stop sign
Barrie Police emphasized that content shared online can be used as evidence in criminal investigations. Residents are reminded that posting videos of illegal activity may result in charges and legal consequences.
