A new student art exhibition highlighting emerging creative voices is open at Georgian College’s Barrie campus.
“Authenticity” features work by graduating students in the college’s Visual and Digital Media Arts program and runs until April 15th, at the Campus Gallery. Guest-curated by Georgian alumna Yasmeen Kazak, now a Curatorial Assistant at the MacLaren Art Centre, the exhibition showcases a range of artistic practices including painting, sculpture, video animation, digital media and mixed-media works.
The exhibit offers a glimpse into the ideas, techniques and personal perspectives developed by students throughout their studies, while also marking an important milestone as they transition toward professional creative careers. Organizers say the exhibition also reflects strong ties between Georgian graduates and the local arts community.
“As a former student of Georgian College’s Design and Visual Arts programs myself, it was wonderful coming back to curate the work of this year’s students,” says Yasmeen Kazak. “The artworks are profound, authentic, vulnerable, technically precise and joyfully experimental. This exhibition celebrates a new generation of artists while also highlighting the possibilities of a career in the arts.”
“We, as artists over the last two years have shared a space to create vulnerable and raw art,” adds Fiona Smithyes, a graduating Visual and Digital Media Arts student. “Authenticity is how we express ourselves in the art we make. We want to share that authenticity with viewers in an open and honest way.”
The exhibition is available at the Campus Gallery, located in Room 140 of the Helen and Arch Brown Centre for Design and Visual Arts, with regular gallery hours running throughout the exhibition.
